Nilscodd, officially the Kingdom of Nilscodd, is a country in northern Tassimir. It is bordered by placeholder : ___ to the east, placeholder : the ___ Desert to the south, and the Mindron Sea to the north. At 2,991,901 square kilometres, Nilscodd is the largest country in Tassimir and the seventh-largest in the world, although the placeholder : name of desert occupies the majority of its area and the population and economy are concentrated in the Mediterranean coastal strip. With a population of 99 million, it is the fifth-most populous country in Tassimir. Its capital and largest city is Nilscom.
The territory of modern Nilscodd was inhabited in antiquity by the placeholder : ___ peoples and formed part of the placeholder : ___ Empire, which collapsed in placeholder : c. 600 NE. The region was subsequently settled by the Chambem, a northern tribe whose language, dynasty, and political culture were absorbed by the indigenous population over the following centuries to form the modern Nilscoddi people. The Kingdom of Nilscodd consolidated in placeholder : c. ___ NE, and from the placeholder : ___ century onward developed into a major naval and colonial power, holding extensive overseas territories of which Tornamm was the largest. The Leoddiner War of placeholder : c. 1870 NE resulted in the loss of most overseas possessions and the brief Nilscoddi Republic before the parliamentary restoration of the monarchy in placeholder : c. 1885 NE.
Nilscodd is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. The reigning monarch is placeholder : ___ of the House of {{placeholder|___}}. The country is divided into placeholder : ___ administrative divisions. placeholder : It is a member of ___ international organisations.
Nilscodd has a Mediterranean climate and a coastal economy historically dominated by maritime trade, fishing, and placeholder : ___. Despite its southern latitude and Mediterranean ecology, Nilscoddi national culture is of northern origin, a feature reflected in the country's language, cuisine, and self-identification.
Etymology
The name Nilscodd is a Chambemish transliteration of the older indigenous toponym Nulsokadiy, recorded in the form Neelsercode at the time of the first Chambem landings in placeholder : c. 600 NE. Early Chambem settlers parsed the indigenous name as the compound *neelser* ("checkerboard") and *code* ("fish"), both productive nouns in their own language. Over the following two centuries, regular phonological change reduced the compound to its modern form Nilscodd, the components surviving independently as the modern Nilscoddi nouns nils and codd. The compound remains transparent to modern speakers as "checkerboard fish".
The fish has subsequently become a recurring motif in Nilscoddi national iconography, while the checkerboard pattern, an established element of Chambem visual culture from before the settlement, has remained central to Nilscoddi art and heraldry.
The official long-form name, Nilscodd na Mattmon ("Kingdom of Nilscodd"), has been in use since placeholder : c. ___.
History
Antiquity
placeholder : Pre-imperial peoples and cultures of the region. Archaeological periods. Major sites.
The territory was incorporated into the placeholder : ___ Empire in placeholder : c. ___ BNE, forming the imperial province of placeholder : ___. Under imperial rule the region was known as Nulsokadiy. The imperial administrative language displaced Nulsokadiy in urban centres, while Nulsokadiy continued in use as a first language in rural areas.
The placeholder : ___ Empire collapsed in placeholder : c. 600 NE, leaving the region open to settlement by northern tribes participating in the wider dismemberment of the imperial frontier.
Chambem settlement and ethnogenesis
In placeholder : c. 600 NE, the Chambem, a northern tribe originally from placeholder : the ___ region, migrated south by sea and settled along the coast of Nulsokadiy. The Chambem intermarried with the indigenous population from the earliest period of contact, and the imperial administrative language was supplanted in the cities by Chambemish, the ancestor of modern Nilscoddi. The indigenous Nulsokadiy language, already restricted to rural use under imperial rule, fell out of common use over the following centuries and is generally regarded as extinct by placeholder : c. 900–1000 NE; substantial Nulsokadiy lexical and toponymic substrate survives in modern Nilscoddi.
By the end of the first millennium NE, the genetic, cultural, and linguistic distinctions between Chambem settlers and the indigenous population had been substantially erased through intermarriage and cultural assimilation, producing the modern Nilscoddi people as a single national group.
Kingdom of Nilscodd
The Kingdom of Nilscodd consolidated under placeholder : King ___ in placeholder : c. ___ NE, unifying the Chambem-settled coastal territories under a single dynasty. placeholder : Early consolidation, dynastic history, principal medieval-equivalent events, relations with neighbouring states.
Naval expansion and the colonial empire
From the placeholder : ___ century, Nilscodd emerged as a leading naval power in Tassimir. placeholder : Key wars, treaties, founding of overseas trading posts. The colony of Tornamm, founded in placeholder : c. ___, became the largest and most economically significant overseas possession, eventually exceeding the metropole in area by approximately tenfold. Coffee and dye production in Tornamm, organised by a class of settler landowners known as planteurs, formed a substantial share of the kingdom's revenue by the placeholder : ___ century.
Leoddiner War and First Republic
placeholder : King ___ died in placeholder : c. 1870 NE without a ratified pragmatic sanction. The crown passed to his nephew placeholder : King ___, supported by the liberal parliamentary majority and the army. The late king's daughter, Princess Leoddin, contested the succession with the support of the navy and the colonial administration. After her defeat in the metropole, Leoddin withdrew to Tornamm with the loyalist fleet and proclaimed the Empire of Tornamm in placeholder : c. 1870 NE. Most other overseas Nilscoddi possessions declared for Tornamm.
The departure of Leoddin and her supporters effectively removed the reactionary and high-conservative factions from Nilscoddi politics, the bulk of whom emigrated to Tornamm in the years following the war. The economic disruption caused by the loss of colonial revenue, combined with widespread dissatisfaction with the monarchy, led to the deposition of placeholder : King ___ and the proclamation of the Nilscoddi Republic in placeholder : c. ___ NE. The deposed king withdrew into private life placeholder : in ___.
Restoration
The First Republic was governed by the liberal coalition that had brought it into being, the only significant political faction remaining in metropolitan Nilscodd after the emigration of the conservative and reactionary right to Tornamm. The coalition contained both republican and monarchist tendencies, the latter holding that the constitutional and economic difficulties of the Republic were best resolved by the restoration of a constitutional monarchy under the deposed cousin-king.
In placeholder : c. 1885 NE, following the second republican general election, placeholder : Prime Minister ___, leader of the monarchist wing of the liberal coalition, secured a parliamentary majority for the restoration of the monarchy. The act was passed by the placeholder : name of legislature without recourse to a popular referendum, and placeholder : King ___ returned from placeholder : ___ to resume the throne. placeholder : Prime Minister ___'s government lost the subsequent general election, but no successor administration sought to reverse the restoration, and the monarchy has continued under the cousin-king's line to the present day.
